How the movie, Twins, makes me train harder.

Yes, you read that right.

Twins, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, is one of my all-time favorite movies.  Yes, you read that right too.  I love it, I can recite just about every line, and still laugh every time I watch it.  I’m laughing right now just thinking about it.

So how in the world does watching this movie inspire me to work out harder?  This is a picture from the scene of my inspiration…study it.

Do you see Arnold’s arms?  His shoulders?  Chest?  Back?  No, no, no, and no.  What do you see?  His calves!!!!  Look at them, they’re awesome.

Admit it, we all wear pants when we go out.  In the summertime, we wear shorts.  Most of us wear shirts as well.  We cover up our thighs.  We usually cover up our chest, our back, shoulders, and sometimes our arms.  Unless you’re wearing long pants, your calves are exposed.

Watching this scene made me realize how important calves are to your overall aesthetics.  If Arnold had little, stick legs you wouldn’t even give what’s under his coat a second thought.  But look at those calves!!!!

Anyone who regularly goes to the gym has heard the phrase, “never skip leg day.”  Unfortunately, most guys do just that, skip leg day.  Since our legs are covered up with our pants, why train legs?  No one is going to see them.  You’re wrong, chicken legs, we notice.

I train legs VERY hard.  In fact, I’ll generally have to crawl upstairs to get to my bedroom after training legs.  They are that tired and that sore.  I train my calves three or four times a week.  Why?  Because when I wear shorts, I want my calves to ‘shine.’  Unless I have on jeans (I don’t own a pair of khakis), everyone can see my calves.  I don’t want stick legs.

Calves are notorious for being stubborn.  They just don’t like to grow.  Many guys either give up or just do a couple sets at the end of their leg “workout.”  Not me.  As with everything, I separate myself from the norm.

Two or three times a week, at the end of my workout, I’ll hit my calves with four sets of either seated or standing calf raises.  On leg day, they are hit with four sets of each for a total of eight sets.  I don’t go through the motions either.  They are trained HARD.

I want my wheels to look good.  Which reminds me of my favorite Twins line…

“Did you see me there with the two wheels?”
